About

Our community was born from a desire to bring the Carmelite way of life to the York Region area.

In the early 2000s, several members of Our Lady of Peace Lay Carmelite Community in Etobicoke recognized that people living north of Toronto faced a long commute to attend monthly Carmelite meetings. As interest in Carmelite spirituality grew, discussions began about establishing a new community closer to home.

After a period of prayer, discernment, and preparation, a study group was formed at St. Luke's Parish in Thornhill in the winter of 2009. Guided by experienced Lay Carmelites and supported by the regional leadership of the Order, the group gathered regularly for prayer, formation, and fellowship. As membership grew and the community demonstrated stability, it was formally founded on November 30, 2010.

From the beginning, we embraced the traditional Carmelite pillars of prayer, community, and service. Members committed themselves to a deeper life of prayer through the Liturgy of the Hours, lectio divina, and the rich spiritual teachings of the Carmelite doctors, saints, and blesseds like St Teresa of Avila, St John of the Cross, St Therese of Lisieux, and St Titus Brandsma. At the same time, we sought to support one another in living their vocation within family life, parish life, and the wider community.

Today, we continue to welcome those who feel drawn to the spirituality of Carmel. Although our community was founded in 2010, we share in a heritage that stretches back more than 800 years to the first hermits on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. Inspired by the prophet Elijah and the Blessed Virgin Mary, we strive to live that same spirit of prayerful friendship with God in the heart of everyday life.

As part of the Canada East–New York Region of the Lay Carmelites, we remain united with Carmelite communities throughout Canada, the United States, and the world, carrying forward a tradition that continues to inspire Christians seeking a deeper relationship with Christ.

We are Lay Carmelite Community #5815, a Roman Catholic community of men and women who are called to live the Carmelite vocation in the midst of ordinary life.

Our members come from a variety of backgrounds, occupations, and life experiences, but we share a common desire: to grow closer to Jesus Christ through prayer, community, and service. Inspired by the spirituality of the Carmelite Order, we seek to deepen our relationship with God while remaining active in our families, parishes, workplaces, and communities.

We meet monthly at St. Luke's Parish in Thornhill, Ontario, for a day of prayer, formation, fellowship, and community life. Our meetings typically include Morning Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours, lectio divina (prayerful reflection on Sacred Scripture), community business, spiritual formation, and time for friendship and fellowship.

As Lay Carmelites, we follow the Rule of St. Albert, the Rule of the Carmelite Third Order, and the Provincial Statutes. We draw inspiration from the rich Carmelite tradition, including the teachings of St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. Elizabeth of the Trinity, St. Titus Brandsma, and many other Carmelite doctors, saints and blesseds.

We are part of the Canada East–New York Region (CENY), which consists of twelve Lay Carmelite communities and approximately 250 members across eastern Canada and New York State. Through the region, we remain connected to Lay Carmelites throughout North America and the world.

Our community currently has fifteen members, including those in various stages of formation and profession. While many members have been part of Carmel for years, we continue to welcome new inquirers who feel drawn to a deeper life of prayer and a closer relationship with God.
